Ok,
The last few lessons have focused on THE DETAILS needed to subtly create good characters and settings. Honestly, that is 80% of fiction writing right there: the details in the things that are seen, heard, felt, etc. The meaning behind the things that are done and the things that are said.
This week, I want you to pick EITHER ONE TRAIT (if could be mood) or ONE LOCATION, and in a composition of at least a page, I would like you to describe a scene that features that TRAIT or LOCATION.
- You create the context of the scene. Who the characters are, what the background story is, what's going on in that world... all this you get to decide. What I will be looking for are the details you use to fully characterize this trait, or describe this setting (which could include emotional setting as well), and whether or not you are a little too obvious in your description. Shoot for subtlety here
YOUR CHOICES:
TRAIT or mood: Embarrassment, Terror, Peacefulness
or
Physical LOCATION: Psychiatric Ward, Hardware Store, Casino, School (no help with this one).
Read through the corresponding documents I am providing. Use that information in your writing. ALL of it is useful and valuable.
HEY!! Why not try out some of that awesome vocab./ sentence structure/ figurative expression you have been mining the last 6 weeks? Go back and look at the work you did, and see if any form of that writing (not EXACTLY the same, but similar) has seeped into your writing brain.
In order to help me recognize your good work, please ANNOTATE your writing in whatever way you can, showing me what details and what mined language you have used in your work from previous reading, activities, etc.
Good luck, and good writing!
Pike
